Tojtik, Guatemala - Shipped By Sail
From Guatemala to Bristol - A Coffee Shipped By Sail
We’re beyond excited to welcome the wonderful Tojtik coffee from the Asproguate Co-op in the Acatenango region of Guatemala. A delicious sweet cup of coffee with deep notes of chocolate, toffee and brown sugar. This coffee has travelled on three ships, before arriving just a few miles from Yallah’s roastery near Falmouth. We are exceptionally and proud to be able to share this coffee with the customers at FED, and thank Yallah and everyone else involved in the chain for all the hard work it took to get this coffee here. What an honour.
This is an opportunity to showcase the merits of coffee shipped by sail, not just for the environmental benefits, but for the wider community impact too. A true collaboration of like-minded folk putting people and community first. We believe this coffee is the best in class for carbon reduction. It is organically grown and produced, low carbon shipping by sail and roasted on an electric roaster powered entirely by renewable energy.
The word Tojtik refers to the roots of the native Acatenango community. The world means “ours” and reflects the spirit, tradition and hard work of these small scale producers.
This coffee is grown in nutrient-rich soils, thanks to the magnificent Acatenango, Fuego and Agua volacanoes (Fuego is still active). Centuries of volcanic ash have significantly enhanced the soil’s structure and mineral content, creating ideal growing conditions for coffee. We also know the farming methods are organic, guaranteeing a crop free of synthetic chemicals, respecting biodiversity, and promoting the natural balance of the ecosystem.
The reason this is so important to us at FED is that we always try to align ourselves with businesses that show environmental, ethical and community based attributes first, alongside an entrenched standard of exceptional quality.
This project from Yallah is the epitome of this, a culmination of years of building connections with producers, shippers and buyers, all with a lifelong dedication to a more sustainable and fairer future. We feel responsible as a business to provide a platform to push this narrative that is becoming ever more important. We hope that running this coffee in our cafes, hanging these amazing pictures from James Bowden on our walls, getting our team informed and chatting to our customers will encourage people to look at the standards they hold when buying coffee and hopefully other products in the future. It’s about spending our money more consciously and with the knowledge that the money we put into the world can feed the businesses it needs to for a more beneficial future.
This is Yallah’s story to tell and they can tell it so well.
